It’s hard to believe that there are still some companies out there that don’t seem to grasp the concept that treating their workers well can help to improve their company’s bottom line. The data has shown that employee morale can directly affect an organization’s bottom line in terms of sales, productivity, customer service and overall attitude.
Every year, various publications publish lists nominating the worst employer of the year. Jon Hyman of Workforce.com has already named his first pick for 2017. Salerno Protective Services recently fired newly hired Lamar Austin, 30, because he chose to be with his wife when she gave birth to their son on January 1st.
“I thought, ‘I’m just going to do what I feel is right for my family,’ and that’s it,” Austen told the Huffington Post.
The worst part for Austin, who is a military veteran and father of four, was that he had just started the job. He’d shown up for all of his shifts before his wife went into labor. But because he was still on his 90-day probation, due to his absences, Salerno Protective Services terminated him. What really clinched Solerno’s nomination as this year’s worst employer is that they even had the temerity to terminate Austin via a text message sent at 1:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day. What a thing to get while his wife was recovering from having given birth!
All hope is not lost for Lamar Austin. Hyman reports that since the appearance of the article in the Huffington Post, Austin’s email box has been flooded with job offers from other employers.
There is no shortage of stories about bad employers. It takes a fine balance to know when to apply the rules, and when making exceptions might be a better choice, even with newly hired workers. No organization ever wants to be named to a list of bad employers. Don’t take chances with your reputation with potential workers by partnering with a PEO organization that will look out for workers and for you.
